The public relations (PR) landscape in Nigeria has often been criticized for its narrow focus on media relations, neglecting its crucial role in crisis management and conflict resolution.
Over time, professionals have advocated for campaigns to reshape the perception of PR and move away from conventional paradigms, especially in today’s rapidly evolving tech-driven world, where there’s a growing need for PR practitioners to project a positive image and delve into their core role of conflict management and resolution.
Against this backdrop and in light of recent global conflicts and political unrest, the Experiencing PR Annual Conference, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at reshaping the perception of PR in Nigeria, is taking centre stage with its third edition themed “Quiet Wars: Leveraging Public Relations for Conflict Management”.
Open to both men and women, this hybrid business conference, organised by Nigerian Women in PR, will bring together a diverse array of delegates, including public office holders, senior business executives, and PR professionals, to explore innovative strategies and best practices in the field.
According to Tolulope Olorundero, CEO of Mosron Communications and Convener of the Experiencing PR Conference, the importance of PR has never been more evident in today’s complex world. “We are faced with challenging problems stemming from communication breakdowns,” she explains.
“This conference aims to address these issues by exploring the role of PR in conflict management and decision-making. It is particularly in the light of crippling wars between nations in the West, military interruption of democratic governments in Africa that the theme of Experiencing PR 2024 was framed. Strategic communications advisory is set against the study and understanding of several factors that influence business and governments actions.”
With a focus on conflict management, this year’s conference explores the intricate ways conflicts manifest in contemporary society and how PR strategies can be used to mitigate tensions. The diverse lineup of speakers, including local and regional experts, will share their strategies for navigating conflicts and influencing decision-making.
“Our goal with Experiencing PR 2024 is to provide leaders with new insights and tactics that will support decision-making in today’s dynamic environment,” says Olorundero.
“The design and delivery of the Experiencing PR is unique and first of its kind in the global PR industry. While led by women, the conference is not gender-focused but aims to contribute significantly to the global body of PR knowledge, particularly in developing economies. Our industry experts will also share new tactics that will support decision making in 2024 and beyond. Our publications will also contribute significantly to the body of knowledge in the industry and particularly fill the knowledge gap of how PR is practiced in developing markets, as well as the practical reality of Nigerian women across continents.”
Through panel discussions, workshops, and networking sessions, delegates will have the opportunity to collaborate, exchange ideas, and gain practical skills that they can apply in their professional endeavors. The conference will also serve as a platform for Nigerian women in PR to showcase their expertise and contribute to the advancement of the industry.
