Chris Wulf-Caesar: A CEO’s journey “Back to the Roots”, where it all began

The recent appointment of Chris Wulf-Caesar as the new CEO of Unilever Ghana seems to embody precisely that sentiment—a return to the very roots from which his illustrious journey in the FMCG industry began to sprout.

Chris’s connection to Unilever runs deep, deeper than our inquisitive hearts can fathom.

Chris Wulf-Caesar emerged as a product of Unilever’s ethos from birth, born to a mother who dedicated over two decades to the leading FMCG brand. This early exposure to the company’s values laid the foundation for his remarkable career trajectory.

His journey with Unilever commenced when he received a scholarship from Unilever Ghana, facilitating his secondary education. Fate further intertwined his path with Unilever as he embarked on his National Service in the Personnel Department, immersing himself in employee relations and management development.

Despite briefly departing to join Maersk, Chris’s unwavering affinity for Unilever led him to apply for the rigorous Unilever Management Trainee program. His resilience bore fruit when he emerged as one of three selected candidates out of over 500 applicants.

Rejoining Unilever Ghana as a management trainee in 1999, Chris embarked on a comprehensive journey across various departments, immersing himself in every facet of the company’s operations. From packing soap on the factory floor to tending to the plantations, Chris’s hands-on experience shaped his holistic understanding of Unilever’s business landscape.

Driven by a desire to become a brand custodian, Chris transitioned to marketing after completing his management traineeship. His tenure as brand manager for OMO saw the successful launch of OMO Multiaction, marked by innovative stain removal activations that captivated audiences across Ghana.

In 2003, Chris’s journey took him to Unilever South Africa, where he played a pivotal role in the Regional Savoury Team, traversing the African continent and garnering invaluable insights into diverse markets. Amidst professional growth, Chris also embraced personal milestones, including marriage and fatherhood.

Returning to Unilever Ghana in 2006, Chris assumed the role of Marketing Manager for Foods, steering iconic brands like Frytol, Blueband, and Royco to new heights. His transformative leadership caught the attention of Accra Brewery Limited, where he orchestrated a remarkable resurgence of Ghana’s beloved lager beer brand, CLUB.

Following a distinguished tenure in the beverage industry, Chris transitioned to FrieslandCampina Nigeria, where he held senior leadership positions, culminating in his role as Cluster Marketing Director for Sub-Saharan Africa.

Now, 17 years after departing Unilever Ghana, Chris returns as CEO, completing a poignant journey back to his roots.
